Come Out and Hear the Pipe Band
The College of Piping Pipe Band offers an open invitation to attend their evening practices every Thursday at The College at 619 Water East in Summerside. The Junior Pipe Band practices from 5-7 pm and the Senior Band practices from 7 to about 9 pm. In good weather, band practice is outdoors in the Mary Ellen Burns Amphitheatre or in the Main Hall.
The public is invited to come out and watch band practice and lend some support to the ‘hometown heroes’ who won a North American Championship last summer. They are working hard to prepare for the Summerside Highland Gathering competitions June 23-24 and for the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland on Saturday August 11.
The competition medley for the World Championships is made up of: “John and Ellen”, a hornpipe composed by Scott MacAulay; “Brai Riach”, a jig with triple time, “David Ross”, a jig; “Glasgow Police Pipers”; “Auntie Annie” a slow air that is an original composition by MacAulay; “Mollie Connell”, a strathespey or dance beat; “Tail Toddle”, a round reel that is a traditional Irish tune and “The Noose and the Gillies”.
The Pipe Band is growing rapidly and has a total number of 50 with about 25 members in the Junior and Senior ranks. People are encouraged to take their children out to see if they would be interested in beginning lessons in September.
All Prince Edward Island youth between the ages of 8 and 18 have the opportunity to study piping and drumming free of charge under the Doug and Debbie Hall Scholarship Program.
Come out and appreciate what music world-class instruction can produce. Give your children and chance to think about whether they would like to join the band. Getting to travel and working as part of a team are some features of what a pipe band experience offers.
