06-10-2009 | College Pipers into the Prizes
Having been runner-up in his event at the season-opening Halifax Citadel Mini Gathering in April, 14 year-old piper Carson Campbell of Central Bedeque (photo) won the Novice Medal Piobaireachd Challenge Cup at the annual Atlantic Piobaireachd Challenge in Antigonish last weekend.

It was a win that could mark the start of a career path for the 14 year-old student of The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada.

Along with fishing, piping is a passion for the ambitious young player and he hopes to make it part of his life. Piobaireachd is the most technically demanding genre of Highland bagpipe music, a challenge in memorization as well as performance. Many pipers never take on the difficulties of this music, and those who succeed rise to worldwide renown -- often in their 30s or 40s.

Other College of Piping students to make the prize lists in Antigonish in the Antigonish Highland Society and the Atlantic Canada Pipe Band event were two other strong young pipers: John McIntyre, who won the grade 2 event and Sydney Breneol, who was runner-up in grade 3.
