The College of Piping Pipe Band’s history traces back to the Summerside Presbyterian Pipe Band which existed from 1963 to 1969, and reformed in 1986 as The Caledonian Pipe Band. In 1990, the band became affiliated with The College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts of Canada, and began to carry its name in 1993.
Based out of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, the organization boasts two pipe bands that compete in grades 4 and 5 and are registered with the Atlantic Canada Pipe Band Association. With a combined membership of around 40 musicians, these two bands offer a fantastic opportunity for students of The College of Piping to compete and mature as players, while also giving them the opportunity to perform in The College’s summer production, Highland Storm.
Among the band’s successes, since becoming affiliated with The College of Piping, are 3 North American Pipe Band Championship titles coming in 1994 (Grade 3), 1995 (Grade 3) and 2006 (Grade 4). The band also finished in 4th place in Grade 3b at the 2007 World Pipe Band Championships. Coupled with these accomplishments are numerous awards from Atlantic Canada and the Eastern United States, including the Atlantic Canadian Championship title which is currently held by both bands in their respective grades. Both bands will compete for the Grade 4 and 5 North American Championships in July 2011.
The College of Piping Pipe Band is under the direction of Pipe Major James MacHattie, Pipe Sgt. Kylie MacHattie, Pipe Sgt. Nick vanOuwerkerk and Drum Sgt. Chris Coleman.
