The College of Piping Dance Company was created in 1995 to give professional and aspiring professional dancers at The College an opportunity to perform within their community, in their surrounding areas and abroad. It also gives the dancers the oppportunity of learning new choreographed dances along with traditional dances. The Dance Company offers the dancers an opportunity to have careers in dance, improve presentation as well as technique and helps dancers learn to work together.
The dancers who are part of the company have qualified through an audition process and through extensive study, hard work and commitment to excellence.
An extra amount of commitment is required from each of these dancers. They have all of their regular classes and commitments but are expected to rehearse choreographies outside of class time in connection with the professional stage productions mounted annually and for special event programming.
The College of Piping Dance Company are professional paid performers who star in the annual College of Piping Stage Productions. Additionally, members of the Dance Company have performed for HRH Prince Edward, Adrienne Clarkson, the Governor General of Canada and Mary McAleese, the President of Ireland. They have performed on the Tomorrowland Stage of the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida, the Charlottetown Festival at the Confederation Centre of the Arts, at the Jubilee Theatre in Summerside and they have won several choreography awards throughout the Maritimes.
Purpose
- To provide professional dance opportunities for The College of Piping Dance Company
- To Inspire Excellence and develop a group of committed and professional performers to represent The College of Piping at concerts and special events
- To ensure a consistently high standard of performance
- To create a healthy and fun team spirit
- To give dancers a chance to learn new repertoire
General Guidelines
- All experienced dancers have the opportunity to audition for the Dance Company
- Experience is defined as the amount of dancing knowledge the dancer possesses, not necessarily the competitive category
- Acceptance into the Company is at the discretion of the Artistic Directors of The Dance Company
- Dancers will be expected to attend rehearsals and performances as scheduled
Details
Acceptance and continued membership in the Dance Company is contingent upon several important elements:
- Each dancer is expected to display commitment, effort and a positive outlook throughout rehearsals, meetings, and performances
- Each dancer is expected to behave, practice, and perform in a manner befitting a member of a professional team
- Each dancer is asked to participate in or sit out shows as requested - shows are designed to provide the best quality of performance possible, not the most dancers possible
It is of utmost importance that all dancers and their parents understand what we are trying to accomplish. Not every performance will require each and every dancer from the Company, nor will every performance even require the Company.
Each performance will be designed to meet specific requirements. These requirements may include such elements as space, audience, style of performance, age, etc.
Rehearsals
Most rehearsals will be conducted in small groups as opposed to the whole company. This should allow:
- Dancers to make scheduled rehearsals
- Choreographies to be designed for smaller groups as opposed to requiring the full Company
- A substitute dancer to be available in case of absence, such as illness, on a performance day
- Rehearsals to be scheduled to try and accommodate the majority of dancers in the group
- Depending on the group, the rehearsals to be in Summerside or Charlottetown
- The rehearsals to be on evenings or weekends
Schedules will depend on choreographies and upcoming events.
